The Big House, O Casarão | Creative feature documentary. Pre-production teaser. The collective experiences of a generation of seminarists who decided to give up their “calling”. The last days of a complex that, for years, took in those same boys with the promise of a better life. From the lives and memories of here and there, The Big House invites the viewer to embark on a first person voyage within a paradox: the contradiction of finding freedom in the most unlikely place during Salazar’s dictatorship. But this documentary is also a film about growth — a slice of life about choices, fears, discoveries and affections. Settled on the permanent dialogue between the sombre rural Portugal of Estado Novo and the present day, The Big House proposes us to reflect the process of human maturation alongside the rhythm of the country’s laicization process.
